YAHOO! WYLIE’S ON LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O’BRIEN

March 31, 2008

Wylie GustafsonNo joking, just yodeling.

Well, actually, there’ll probably be both when Wylie Gustafson, the YODELING COWBOY who made famous his catchy and drawn-out signature “Ya-Hoo-Ooo,” appears on late-night TV tomorrow (April 1).

Everyone’s favorite singer, songwriter, horseman and original Yahoo yodeler is scheduled to appear on “LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O’BRIEN” on April Fool’s Day.

No foolin’!

Folks are encouraged to tune in at 12:37 a.m. That’s when Wylie is scheduled to yodel with Conan — a duet that we at ON can only predict will be totally awesome — to help promote Wylie’s new book, “How to Yodel: Lessons to Tickle Your Tonsils,” published by Gibbs-Smith Publishing. (If the show’s on past your bedtime, you can watch it here later.)

A national cutting horse competitor, Wylie was born into a ranching family in Montana and, after paying his dues in Los Angeles, continues to ride the trails of a real cowpoke out on his ranch in rural Dusty, Wash., a town near Pullman rumored to have a population of 11, including dogs.

But folks around here know Wylie as frontman of the honky tonk outfit The Wild West. Wylie and his group have performed at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nev., the Grand Ole Opry (more than 50 times), the Lincoln Center, Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival, on public radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and are familiar faces at the Yakima Valley Museum (one of Wylie’s favorite places to play) and Ellensburg’s Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering.

A LISTENING LUNCH

March 14, 2008

I’m just back from today’s brown bag concert at The Seasons and it was a lunch hour well spent.

The featured artist was Selah pianist Bart Roderick, along with a bunch of his friends — Bob Waldbauer, Don Kinney, Joe Brooks, Jim Brunner, Pat Moss and Bart’s daughter Liz, who played a couple of her own original songs.

This is the first time I’ve seen Liz perform and I just love her high, kind of ringy voice and quirky lyrics. She’s about to record an album with her dad and uncle, John Roderick of The Long Winters, so stay tuned for that.

*Kim Nowacki*

p.s. If you’ve got an hour to kill from noon to 1 p.m. on Fridays, do check out the brown bag concerts at The Seasons. Admission is only $5 for adults and free for students. Next week’s concert is by the local teen bluegrass group Camaraderie.

A MOVIE NOT TO MISS

March 13, 2008

The second — and most moving, important and thought-provoking film — in the ALLIED ARTS LATINO CULTURAL FILM SERIES is next Thursday’s (March 20) “CROSSING ARIZONA,” a powerful documentary that follows the border struggle between Mexico and the Grand Canyon state.

Watch the trailer: HERE.

One of the people featured in the film (and the trailer) is Mike Wilson, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation, who MAINTAINS WATER STATIONS on tribal lands on behalf of the aid organization Humane Borders. It’s Wilson’s encounter with a man who has just crossed the boarder looking for work to help pay for his wife to have an operation, that provides for one of the film’s most moving scenes.

Wilson will be the guest speaker leading the discussion after Thursday’s screening.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with wine tasting and tapas at the Allied ArtsCenter, 5000 W. Lincoln Ave. The screening is at 6:45 p.m. followed by the discussion. Admission costs $5 and seating is limited.

WORTH THE HOOPLA? YES!

March 12, 2008

Are all those postings Dan Craig keeps sending out on MySpace about TRAVIS MORRISON being the coolest thing, like ever, to hit the Sports Center for real?

Yeah, they are.

ON Mag hearts Travis Morrison.

Especially this song off his new disk, “All Y’all.” LISTEN

You can read more about Morrison in the Night Life Spotlight section in Friday’s On Magazine.

SXSW: YOU WANT LINKS, WE GOT YOUR LINKS

March 6, 2008

SXSW 2008
It’s SXSW time again, the annual music, film and technology festival in Austin, Texas.

But if you can’t get down to Austin to check out all the buzz-worthy (or over-hyped) bands next week (March 12-16), never fear.

I’ve been SCOURING THE SXSW WEB SITE AS WELL AS THE REST OF CYBERSPACE for all the cool ways you can join in the big to-do without, you know, actually having to deal with all those hipsters in person.

Here’s what I found:

• The SXSW MUSIC PLAYER (click on the “SXSW Player” link on the left towards the bottom of the page).
With this continuous stream of music, you can daydream at work about actually being at the indie music marathon.

• Or, you can scan alphabetically through all the artists performing and if there’s a little CASSETTE-LOOKING ICON next to their name, it means there’s an MP3 you can listen to.

• The SXSW showcase music TORRENTS dating back to 2005.

• Here’s a preview of the festival from NPR.

• And for sure, Seattle indie radio station KEXP will be whoopin’ it up down in Austin next week.

• Once things get rolling, you can check out VIDEOS and PODCASTS.

• If you have DIRECTV’s Channel 101, on March 13-15, you can watch live broadcasts from two of the Austin music venues.

• Here’s the AUSTIN CHRONICLE’S complete coverage.

• Of course, you’ll want to be a fan of SXSW on FACEBOOK.

• Or, if you’re into the whole TWITTER THING.

And, most likely by now, you’re wondering who the hell is VAMPIRE WEEKEND and are they really worth all the buzz?
Yes, yes they are.

IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE!

March 6, 2008

2008 CWSF logoThis year’s Central Washington State Fair is looking to celebrate good times, as well as everything else there is to be proud of about our region.

“CELEBRATE WHAT’S GREAT!” is the theme for the 115th Central Washington State Fair, organizers announced today (March 6).

“There are so many things to celebrate about Central Washington,” Greg Stewart, fair president and general manager, said in a news release. “We think this theme will be a great umbrella for helping us show off the region’s sun, wine and agriculture, along with the fair’s entertainment, food and fun.”

Past fair themes have included “This Year’s Fair is Nine-O-Mite!” (1977), “Go Fair Crazy!” (1986), “Bodacious!” (2000), “Who Let the Hogs Out” (2001), “Sweet!” (2005) and “LOL” (2007). (You’ll notice that the liberal use of exclamation points is key to a good slogan.)

The 10-day fair runs Sept. 26-Oct. 5 at State Fair Park.

DJ CONTEST RESULTS

March 6, 2008

So, apparently EVERYONE WON THE YAKIMA SPORTS CENTER DJ CONTEST.

Lovelyfade and DJ Hitman each walked away with $100, but most of the DJs who competed have been invited back to spin on Thursdays at the Sports Center.

Spinning tonight (March 6) beginning at 9 p.m. are DJ Skiles and DJ Hitman.

Who will be rocking the turntables next week? I have no idea.

BEST QUOTE I’VE READ TODAY

March 3, 2008

“If Richards and Jagger were grunge almost-Gods,” says author Charles Cross, “they’d be Dulli and Lanegan. Both have had more respect from other musicians than they’ve had commercial success, yet both still mine the same dark, lost visages. Lanegan not only seems like a character out of a Raymond Carver short story, he continues to astound everyone as he keeps putting out tremendous music long after most of his cohorts have faded, died, or given up.”

— From Tim Appelo’s story on the Gutter Twins in today’s Seattle P.I.
